How do you become a Cyprus citizen?
Most people obtain Cyprus citizenship through naturalisation after a qualifying period of lawful residence. A faster four-to-five-year route may apply to certain highly skilled employees. The legal team must confirm the exact residence calculation for each case.
The former citizenship-by-investment programme was discontinued in 2020, so naturalisation by residence is now the principal route.
Who is it for?
Long-term residents who have built a life in Cyprus, and skilled professionals employed by eligible companies who can use the accelerated route. A separate path exists for spouses of Cypriot citizens.
What are the requirements?
You must show the required lawful residence, including the final continuous period, as well as good character, stable income and the relevant Greek-language qualification.
- Residence: a qualifying total of lawful residence days, with continuous residence in the 12 months before applying.
- Fast-track (highly skilled): reduced period (commonly cited as 4 years with Greek-language attainment, or 5 years otherwise) for those employed under qualifying schemes.
- Greek language: a recognised qualification at the required CEFR level.
- Good character and a clean criminal record.
What is the process and timeline?
- Confirm you meet the residence and language requirements.
- Compile evidence of residence, employment, character and language.
- Submit the naturalisation application to the Civil Registry and Migration Department.
- Assessment and decision. This stage can take a considerable time.
