British citizens can still move to Cyprus after Brexit, but most new arrivals now apply as non-EU nationals. The right route depends on whether you will retire, work remotely, take a Cyprus job or invest.
What are the requirements for moving to Cyprus from the UK?
There is no single post-Brexit application for every British mover. If you were lawfully resident in Cyprus before the end of the Brexit transition period, separate Withdrawal Agreement protections may apply. New movers generally compare these routes:
- Visitor residence permit, often called a pink slip: for people supported by foreign income who will not work for a Cyprus employer.
- Digital Nomad Visa: for remote employees or freelancers working for businesses and clients outside Cyprus.
- Permanent residence by investment: for applicants making a qualifying investment of at least €300,000 and meeting the income conditions.
- Work permit: normally sponsored through a qualifying Cyprus employer.
Read the Cyprus residency comparison before choosing a route. A property purchase by itself does not automatically give a British citizen residence rights.
Can I retire to Cyprus from the UK?
Yes. Retirees usually compare temporary visitor residence with permanent residence by investment. Your pension income, healthcare cover, property plans and desired permanence determine which route is more suitable.
Your UK State Pension can be paid abroad. UK guidance says it normally continues to receive annual increases while you live in Cyprus. Private and occupational pensions need separate tax and provider checks before you move or transfer funds.

What happens to UK and Cyprus tax?
Immigration residence and tax residence are different tests. Your Cyprus permit does not automatically settle where you pay tax, and leaving the UK does not automatically make you non-UK resident.
Before moving, model the UK Statutory Residence Test, your likely Cyprus days and the UK-Cyprus double tax treaty. If you become Cyprus tax resident, the Cyprus non-dom regime may be relevant to dividends and interest. Pension income, property income, capital gains and company ownership each need individual advice.
How does healthcare work for British residents?
Healthcare access depends on your status. Workers generally contribute through Cyprus social insurance. Eligible UK State Pension recipients may be able to obtain an S1 form and register for Cyprus's General Healthcare System, known as GESY. Other residence applications may require private medical cover.
An EHIC is for temporary stays and is not a replacement for resident healthcare arrangements. The UK government maintains current guidance on healthcare for UK nationals in Cyprus.
Driving, banking and the practical move
UK government guidance says a resident should exchange a UK driving licence within six months of becoming resident in Cyprus. Banking and residence applications commonly require proof of address, evidence of income, health cover and legalised civil-status documents.
- Choose the residence route before committing to a property or shipping date.
- Build a UK and Cyprus tax timeline for the year of departure.
- Arrange healthcare evidence and obtain apostilles where required.
- Plan banking, currency conversion and source-of-funds evidence.
- Check driving-licence exchange, pet travel and removals requirements.
